All babies are born with a natural affinity to the water, after having
just been in it for nine months. They are born with a natural reflex called the 'mammamalian diving response'.
This reflex enables babies to automatically hold their breath when submerged underwater.
babysplashers classes use this reflex to form the basis
of the session. You may ask why we use submersion? Until babies are about two and a half years old they do not
have the physical ability and skills to lift their heads to breathe therefore are unable to swim on the surface. Your
baby will learn, with training, to propel themselves underwater for a short distance hence giving them some independence even
before they can crawl or walk on land.
This is only a small part of the session. Your baby will also learn to safely
fall in from the side, turn underwater and kick back up to the surface to hold onto the poolside. This vital safety
skill may one day save their life!
Other aspects of the class involve stimulating babies amphibian reflex - you will see
babies as young as eight weeks kicking their legs! All these skills are taught using word association techniques.
We hope to see you at a class really soon!
